Have You Registered Yet?

Have you registered for Aloka Foundation's 24hr Metta event? Yes, the round-the-clock chanting at SJK (C) Sungai Way, Jln SS 9A/1, Petaling Jaya from 31 December 2011 to 1 January 2012 for world peace, stability and harmony.

But wait a minute. Questions are popping in your head. Why do I have to register for chanting? And also why do I have to contribute RM30 for registration? These questions begged to be answered.

Registration is required to assist the Organising Committee in planning and anticipating the crowd during the 24 hours. It is also for the Organising Committee to maintain regular communications with registrants, which then serves to remind and update registrants on the event.

The common response from people at our promotional roadshows are: "I don't know where I’ll be (during New Year’s eve and New Year’s day)… I don’t know what I'll do then… I can’t commit myself to this yet…". This only reinforces the need for registration.

The RM30 contribution also serves as a form of commitment. On top to that, the RM30 entitles one to a metta kit or goody bag comprising a compendium of metta book, a candle in a glass which is to be a light offering to be made to the Triple Gem, etc. Part of the RM30 will also be utilised a contribution to the sanghika dana.

For the convenience of many, registration can be made online via www.24hrmetta.org and payment can also be made online via ipay88.

Register now and be part of this landmark even that will illuminate the world with metta and foster peace, stability and harmony. What a great way to usher in the new year!

Reflection 2

Bodhi leaves share the same root. Human beings too, have the same nature and live on the same boat. Boat of no self, impermanence and suffering.

We are the Bodhi leaves, living on the same tree and sharing the same environment. When the environment or surrounding is on fire, we will all face the fury of fire. If any single leaf catches fire, the entire tree will be in trouble. Hence, we need to extinguish our inner fire and live peacefully with others. Only when others are happy will we then be happy. When others are in trouble so will we. We need to have the knowledge to live with those around us as well as within ourselves.

Similarly, only when there is peace and harmony within ourselves, then there will be a tangible benefit that is useful for exploration.

The Four Basic Values: Self Discipline, Respect, Gratitude and Equanimity enable one to live happily with oneself and others. In fact, the so called Four Basic Values are not 'basic'. They are the gems of mankind, worthy of practice and upholding. As the monks show these qualities during Pinapata, they are worthy of veneration, respect and gifts.

I wonder long in this Samsara, in the quest for the true teachings and eventually found this supreme teaching unintentionally. I, Dhammasiri was touched and in tears during the Pinapata Novitiate 2010. Dear Comrades, Brothers and Sisters in Dhamma. Quick! Follow me! Keep watching the activities of our Mind and practice all the Four Basic Values with diligent effort.

Emptiness encompasses ‘Somethingness’ and ‘Nothingness’. Shower in the midst of rainfall-like arrows of Mara`s army and troops. Let Emptiness identify and encompass the action and reaction, right and wrong. Let Maras disappear. Empty as it is. Equanimity and composure.

Words from Dhammasiri: The mind is enlightened because the mind knows suffering; the cause and cessation of suffering, and therefore frees itself from suffering. Taking refuge in Dhamma is refuge in Nibbana. Mind arises due to ignorance. Mind ceases due to Nibbana. No one enters Nibbana but Mind itself (Maras disappear).

I would like to offer my sincerest Thank You to Bhante Mahinda and Sister Sumitra, who organised the Novitiate program, an unforgettable lifetime experience for me. Thank you to all the Monks and Nuns, Dhamma Followers, Helpers, Merchants, Workers and all the `Past Lives Parents` who were present and around me. Lastly, my daughter Jiali who encouraged me to join this precious Novitiate program of a lifetime.

Sarnath - A Reflection on the Novitiate Programme

I never thought I would ever attend the novitiate programme. Two weeks in monk robes, two meals a day, communal temple living, and all the associated restrictions – it all sounded too difficult. Each year as I heard about the novitiate, I would rationalise all the reasons why I could not go – too busy, no leave, other things I had to do – but underlying it all, I was simply not ready.

Unexpectedly then, and at the last minute in September 2009, I decided to sign up for the novitiate programme in Sarnath. I suddenly felt that I was overdue for a “spiritual time out” and that it was time to replenish my fast-depleting “merits bank”. After all, I had often heard Venerable Mahinda’s catch-cry that “the novitiate is an experience that you will never forget in this lifetime, and perhaps future lifetimes”. Though I did not understand precisely why and how the experience would be “unforgettable”, at the time I just wanted to believe it. I also thought that by spending two weeks in one of the four Buddhist holy sites (and enduring all the discomfort outside of my comfort zone), I would at least receive lots of divine blessings and my life would be set for greater things! If I could achieve all of this, surely surviving the two weeks would all be worth it.

Some of you reading this may know what I mean by “surviving the two weeks”. Yes, on the one hand, you want some time to reconnect with your spiritual self, but then the thought of committing two whole weeks in India and enduring the hardship is a little much to bear.

“Really…what will the toilets be like – will there be hot water? Do we get beds? Will I able to sleep in a room with so many people – what happens if there are snorers – and mosquitoes? And I have to wake up at 5am and no dinner?”

You then start to rationalise that perhaps your time and money could be better spent on a holiday elsewhere. After all, you’ve worked hard and you deserve something more enjoyable - and so in this familiar manner, the novitiate is put off for yet another year.

All these quiet questions and inner doubts are understandable (if like me, you’ve become that attached to all the mundane comforts of your life). And therein lies a point. As I realised during the programme, the novitiate is in part an experience that shows us the potential to live a simpler way of life away from all our modern conveniences, yet at the same time still be truly contented and happy. Yes the first days of the programme are hard to adjust to, but in that process, you begin to recognise all your unconscious external dependencies that you assumed to be necessary in your life. And beyond that, how being free from it all is somehow liberating – and that, of itself, is not a bad thing.

But as I now contemplate further, what I learnt was far more than just about leading a simpler way of life. All of the procrastinations, doubts and challenges I feared about the novitiate was in many respects also a personal test of my sincerity in wanting to lead a more spiritual way of life – in some ways becoming like mirror of all the compromises I was making to being (or not being?) a spiritual person. In this manner, the external experience of the novitiate provides an opportunity for internal reflection on what you truly want from your life, what makes you happy, and most importantly, how important is all of this to you.

Nothing quite prepares you for the outward experience of undertaking the spiritual vows at a Buddhist holy site, and its ability to deeply engage and open your mind and heart for the spiritual quest within. The setting of Sarnath, as the place where the Buddha chose to preach his first sermon, both in its symbolism and a fountain source of spiritual energies, could not have been a more fitting backdrop for the 2009 novitiate programme. Taking the vows of a samanera (or novice monk) in the Mulaghanda Kuti Vihara, meditating before the sacred Dhammika stupa, chanting the Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta each night in the very place where the Buddha first uttered it, and walking in the footsteps of the Buddha on our almsround or pindapatta, are moments hard to describe in terms of its deep spiritual impact.

And the internal transformation you undergo is unquestionable, however subtle and whether or not you may realise it at the time. As the shared experiences of the novitiate participants have shown, each person’s objectives / experience may differ from the next, but most agree that the inner transformational experience is profound and encompassing. To participate in a programme that has the genuine capacity to re-engage one’s inner spiritual self, and in the process embrace qualities such as love, compassion, humility, contentment and gratitude, is to experience the Buddha’s teachings unfold in one’s own heart and mind. It is in this respect that Venerable Mahinda’s statement that the novitiate is an “unforgettable experience” truly has an enduring context and power.

So finally, if you are reading this and still contemplating to join a novitiate programme or a spiritual retreat - put all your procrastinations to one side - and just make the decision to do it.

24hr Metta is born

24hr Metta is born, marked by the conceptualisation of the logo which encapsulates the significance and importance of this event that will take place in the 24 hours that straddle between 2011 and 2012.

Initiated by Aloka Foundation, 24hr Metta is dedicated to illuminate the world with loving kindness and foster peace and harmony. It will bring Buddhists together in the practice of metta round the clock for world peace, stability and harmony.

In the 24hr Metta logo above, the opening of the petals depicts the single effort of individuals, as in the single petals, opening up the lotus heart. Together, the petals, as in individuals collectively, radiate as a blooming lotus.

The 12 petals start small, gather strength and grow larger with metta as it go clockwise to depict the round-the-clock effect, thus enhancing the 24hr Metta theme. The colour and shades of the petals transform to represent the inclusivity of the three Buddhist traditions.

Metta Bhavana

Metta Bhavana. Does it sound familiar to you? What does it mean to you? Do you know we have Metta Bhavana session every night at Aloka House?

What is Metta Bhavana? Metta Bhavana(MB) is a daily chanting and meditation session at Aloka House. For most people MB is just another chanting session held in a temple or any Buddhist Center. For me, it is more than that.

I have been leading the 3^rd Wednesday MB session for some time until one day I was requested to chant solo! Normally, we will chant following Bhante Mahinda's chanting CD when leading the session. I panicked! Chanting without the CD as guide is new for me! What if I could not remember the full sequence? What if I chanted wrongly? What if I forget the words! What if this happen? What if that happen? Lots of things played in my mind! With the encouragement given by the senior MB coordinator, I braved myself to lead the session. To my surprise... I enjoyed the whole experience... the feeling of being a follower in chanting and a person who actually lead was very different. It was as though I was talking to the Buddha directly during the chant. I could feel the connection with the Triple Gem! My whole body was energised and happy at the end of the session. It was an amazing experience!

I also discovered the correct pronunciation to some of the chant (as advised later by the senior MB coordinator); which means that all these years I chanted the Pali words wrong while I thought I chanted right :P

Now, I look forward to the MB session! After a stressful day at work, my mind will become peaceful, energised and happy after the MB session. So, for all of you who have not attended any MB session I strongly encouraged you to attend. And try to lead some of the sessions. I can guarantee that you will not regret it! Do not worry! I will be most happy to guide you through the whole session. And those who have been away for some time in participating in the MB session, do come back and connect yourself to the Triple Gem again!

I would like to share what I learnt from the 2010 Novitiate Programme in Kushinara, India.

(1) Four basic values: Self Discipline, Gratitude, Respect and Equanimity from the Pindapata.

(2) Living a simple life is a happy life.

(3) Away from craving. Free from worldly distractions and pollution.

(4) In short, understand the Four Noble Truth, follow the Noble Eightfold Path and Middle Path to be free from the conceited world. This would in turn lead us to realise our intrinsic nature which are: Loving Kindness, Compassion and Purity.

Bodhi Tree - The past lives parents' tree, the tree of ‘LOVE’'. Crowned by the countless heart-shape leaves, signifying countless past lives parents' love.

Parents' love is endless and boundless even at their deathbed, they are still concerned about their children...

Alas... been loved by countless parents... in the past... unknowingly...

In this mighty Samsara, governed by the law of Rebirth and Karma, no self and impermanence. This is indeed Suffering. Realised have been separated from so many parents' love. Unable to help them by preaching to them the Dhamma to release them from Samsara...

During the 2010 Novitiate, Bhante Mahinda asked the assembled before we departed from the Korean Temple:

“Anybody not happy?”

Dhammasiri raised his hand...

Words from Dhammasiri: Refuge in the Buddha is refuge in our nature. Mind arises due to delusion. Mind ceases due to enlightenment. No one is enlightened but the Mind itself.

Noviate Re-collection #2: Sweeping Emotion

During the Novitiate programme, Bhante Mahinda talked about gratitude. Gratitude to everyone who has been a part of our life journey from our parents to teachers, to persons who prepared the food for our daily consumption to the taxi driver to got us to our appointment on time. For the Novitiate programme, we expressed our gratitude to our parents, friends, organizer, helpers, the hotel and monastery that housed us, the driver and even to our bosses who approved our vacation leave to enable us to attend the programme and our colleagues who need to cover for us during our absence.

On my return from the programme, it got me thinking about my attitude towards the road sweeper. Every morning, she will be on either side of the road, sweeping the road diligently. I would get irritated should she be on my side of the road as I will then need to give her space for her trash bin and space to avoid my car being hit by her broom with her sweeping motion. One morning, due to traffic jam, my car stopped within 5 feet behind her trash bin. When she looked up, I gave her a smile, a nod and mouthed ‘Thank You’ to her. She was stunned for a moment and when she recovered, she gave me a wide happy smile. As she continued to sweep the road ahead, she kept turning back and grinning happily back at me.

It was a joyous experience – just a smile in gratitude can make another’s day!

Noviate Re-collection #1: Making Peace with Mosquitoes

Aloka Novitiate 2009, Sarnath

During a novitiate programme, I was bugged by mosquitoes at night. They would buzz and buzzzz and buzzzzz all night -- on my right ear, on my left ear, on both ears. When I shared this with my roommates, they provided a number of remedies - apply tiger balm on the earlobes; spread tiger balm on the pillow; cover your head with a thin scarf, etc. They all didn’t work!

One night Bhante Mahinda talked about the mosquitoes menace and advised us to ‘negotiate’ with the mosquitoes – take your bites then leave so that I can have a good night sleep. Didn’t work either. Next, ask forgiveness from the Mosquitoes Devas, since those I have killed may not be around to receive. It worked, sort of :-P The mosquitoes were still there but the irritation eased a bit, but not for long before I was in full blown irritation mode. Another sleepless night…

Must have killed too many mosquitoes as nothing seemed to work!

Then I had an insight – I must have bugged my mother when I was a child, wanting this and wanting that… eeeeee Mummy this eeeeeee Mummy that… Now suffering the results of my kamma i.e my past action.

Then another insight – mental hindrances – sensual pleasure – the mosquitoes – their buzzing an irritant to my ear sense, anger at their bites on my body, invading my space, causing me sleepless nights – such a strong I, me, my and mine.

Once this understanding arose, I was able to accept the mosquitoes’ buzz, bites and all. They were still buzzing, but not as irritating as before, they were still biting, but with less anger to their bites, they were still buzzing around my face, ears, the whole head, it’s okay it’s their space too and not surpising, I was able to have a good night sleep thereafter.

3C - Connect, Communicate, Connect

Communicate with one another to stay informed.

Commune for the communal support and be self sustaining.

Bhante Mahinda advocates keeping in mind these 3Cs – not the Cs of cash, credit card, condo – to be able to realise, accept and surmount the Big C of Change that always confronts us.

Speaking to past and intending participants of the Aloka Novitiate at Aloka House on Saturday, (24 July 2010) Bhante reminded everyone that “as we live in this time of change, it is important to learn how to cope and accept things as they change”.

He quoted the Buddha (in Dhammapada Verse 277):

Sabbe sankhara anicca'ti
Yada pannaya passati
Atha nibbindati dukkhe
Esa maggo vissuddhiya

Sabbe sankhara anicca'ti: All component things are subject to change

Yada pannaya passati: When one sees with wisdom. Sees what? Sees that all component things are subject to change

Atha nibbindati dukkhe: One becomes detached from suffering

Esa maggo vissuddhiya: This is the path of purification

Bhante said many can say that they understand the word “change” but really, they do not realise the phenomena of change.

“If one realises the phenomena of change, one would have realised the Truth. One would experience the bliss and a certain marked transformation would have taken place. The more one experiences and realises change, the more things will change in one. One’s perception will change and the way of life will change. When one experiences change, one will accept things as they come without reacting (negatively).”

Bhante said the Aloka Novitiate in the holy sacred sites in India created opportunities for participants to connect with the Buddha. Through that, one would then see the Dhamma clearer and be closer to Sangha.

Through the Novitiate experience, the participants knew how to live in peace and harmony in one place. Albeit, living in refugee style but still peacefully. Peaceful atmosphere and great harmony, added Bhante, is the kind of environment that is conducive to support spiritual growth.

“That is why the Buddha instituted the Sangha community; to facilitate the development and purification of the mind.”

Bhante called upon the Aloka Novitiate participants to stay connected with the Triple Gem and create their own Sangha – their own spiritual community.

He advised that the affinity of coming together in the Aloka Novitiate be nurtured by maintaining communication to be informed. And build this up to commune with compassionate love.

In the context of commune and communal support, Bhante said the sensible thing to do in such times of change is to invest in something that will sustain life.

Action Plan

The following are the decisions made in the mini workshop that deliberated on Bhante’s advice of connect, communicate and commune:

Maintain Aloka Connect, groups of five or more that will stay connected and do things together like having fellowships as well as attending Dhamma discussions and Metta Bhavana sessions in Aloka House
Stay connected via Friends of Aloka Facebook
Communicate to inform of prayer support needed in times of sickness or bereavement involving loved ones
Connect each Friday at 8.30 pm to radiate metta and make aspirations for a safe journey in the forthcoming Aloka Novitiate in Kushinara
Set up eco-farm to commune, pick up skills on organic farming, produce organic vegetables, be self-sustaining and have refuge place in times of crisis

Footnote: Bhante emphasised that he called for the gathering of past participants as well as intending participants of Aloka Novitiate as it was easier to group people with one such commonality to start with to provide guidance so as to be able to steer the course of spiritual life. It should not be construed as to exclude others.

During Novitiate Programme at Kushinara

During the pindapata by the Burmese community, we were offered various food and delicacies. After days of having rather bland food, it was a treat! One of the sweets offered was ice cream. I could not wait for the lunch offerings to the monks, speeches and blessing to finish so that I could dig in.

Finally, the wait was over and I dug in. Yucks! It’s not ice cream! It’s yogurt and tasted like burnt rice! As I was under the precept to eat everything that was offered, I decided to mix some of the yucky yogurt with the rice. Not great but bearable :-P As I was contemplating how to finish the rest of the yogurt, a few dogs got into the tent and proceeded to lick and gobbled up whatever they could reach and one of the ‘victim’ was my cup of yogurt :-)

Was I happy with their intervention! Now I could really enjoy the rest of the yummy treats :-)

I know I should view the yogurt as just food; food to sustain the body, to continue to practice. But I am just so not there yet!

Thank you Devas for sending the dogs and saved my lunch!

Develop Wisdom, Cultivate Merits

With the thrice-blessed day of Vesak approaching, it is a good time to bring to mind Bhante Mahinda’s recent exhortations to cultivate wisdom and merits.

In his Dhamma talks just before he returned to Sydney, Bhante Mahinda repeatedly underlined the importance of developing wisdom and cultivating our merit field especially in such times of dramatic change.

“Cultivating wisdom will help us to be able to cope and confront change at all levels,” he said, adding that the wisdom to cultivate revolves around the core teachings of the Buddha – the Four Noble Truths.

Bhante advised that we contemplate, understand and have greater realisation of the Four Noble Truths and realise what dukkha is about. See and recognise the cause of dukkha. Have an understanding that there is an end to suffering. Even though you may not realise it, you must have faith that there is an end. And practise the eight path factors (Noble Eightfold Path)."

Elaborating on this, Bhante said when we hear of, read of, or see calamities, we need to bring to mind that this is dukkha. And then contemplate that there is a cause. What is the cause? It is our grasping of desires, our attachment.

The suffering outside is reflected in the manifestation of suffering internally. "There's a time bomb inside waiting to explode. The sooner we identify this, the better. We must take steps every moment of life to overcome our attachments and cravings."

Now is the time to step up our commitment to the Dhamma's path. Now is the time to be vigilant in the practice of the eight path factors and cleanse our minds of the 'junk' that has clouded our minds."

In his emphasis on cultivating merits, he said that merits are needed to support our wisdom to grow. Cultivate our merit field. Make good use of your life to perform merits," he said, reminding those who have participated in Aloka Foundation's Novitiate Programmes in the four Buddhist holy sites from 2007 to 2010 that they have acquired much merits and it was of great importance that they do not waste the opportunity to build on these merits.

How to cultivate our merit field? Contemplate and commit yourself more and more to the Dhamma. Bhante then prescribed the four contemplations, namely:

contemplation on the virtues of the Buddha – to develop one’s faith and devotion and strengthen one’s mind
contemplation on metta – to reduce anger and aversion
contemplation on loathsomeness of the body – to reduce excessive attachment to body or form
conntemplation on death – to generate the urgency to purify our minds

Train the mind to be more and more in the present. Contemplate and commit yourself to be more and more in the Dhamma.

One who lives by Dhamma, the Dhamma protects

A HISTORIC NOVITIATE IN THE MAKING!

The Aloka Novitiate 2010, Kushinara will be historic! Just in terms of numbers, it will be history in making for the following:

the highest number of participants,
the biggest and widest geographical representation,
the record number shaving, and
the longest land distance covered by a Novitiate

320 participants are taking part in this year's Novitiate; outstripping the 118 in Lumbini in 2007, 309 in Bodhgaya in 2008 and 150 in Sarnath last year.

The 320 are made up of 4 Sangha members, 98 samaneras, 152 upsasikas, 9 anagarikas, 31 pilgrims, and 26 helpers.

At 98 and 152, the number of samaneras and upasikas respectively are the highest ever.

The number shaving is also a record at 166 -- 61 upasikas, 5 anagarikas and 2 helpers in addition to the 98 samaneras -- overtaking the previous record of 130 in Bodhgaya.

The Aloka Novitiate has traditionally been drawing participation from Malaysia, Singapore and Australia but this year, there is greater diversity in terms of geographical representation with participants coming from Indonesia, France and Switzerland as well.

Unlike previous years, the Novitiate programme this year will traverse locations in northern India and Nepal. After 10 days in Kushinara, the Novitiate programme will continue in Sravasti and then proceed to Lumbini, Nepal -- covering an unprecedented land distance!

It also brings to full circle a Novitiate programme that Bhante Mahinda started in 2007 after conducting 32 years of Novitiate programme in the Buddhist Maha Vihara, Brickfields, Malaysia as a commitment to his late teacher Ven K Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Maha Thera

ARE YOU PREPARED?

Some tips to prepare yourself for the Novitiate Programme:

Don't overwork yourselves to the eve of the departure date. Phase out your work as early as possible so that you don't exhaust yourself prior to the trip
Sleep early and wake up early
Cut down on food intake in the evening
Get accustomed to sitting long period on the floor. Start sitting cross legged on floor or flat seat when watching TV or reading
Exercise more and be healthy
Learn chanting and meditation. Start to meditate at least 30 minutes a day
Talk less. Cut down on idle chatter
Acquaint yourself with wearing sarong at home

Some other things to note:

Upasikas who are shaving must get permission from spouse or parents
Upasikas shaving must cut hair short -- recommended above shoulder length for easy and speedier shaving in India
Samaneras and upasikas must bring one set of white attire (top & pants) for shaving & ordination ceremony

Bhante Mahinda advocates keeping in mind these 3Cs – not the Cs of cash, credit card, condo – to be able to realise, accept and surmount the Big C of Change that always confronts us.

Speaking to past and iintending participants of the Aloka Novitiate at Aloka House on Saturday, (24 July 2010) Bhante reminded everyone that “as we live in this time of change, it is important to learn how to cope and accept things as they change”.

He quoted the Buddha (in Dhammapada Verse 277):

Sabbe sankhara anicca'ti
Yada pannaya passati
Atha nibbindati dukkhe
Esa maggo vissuddhiya

Sabbe sankhara anicca'ti; All component things are subject to change

Yada pannaya passati: When one sees with wisdom. Sees what? Sees that all component things are subject to change

Atha nibbindati dukkhe: One becomes detached from suffering

Esa maggo vissuddhiya: This is the path of purification

Bhante said many can say that they understand the word “change” but really, they do not realise the phenomena of change.

“That is why the Buddha instituted the Sangha community; to facilitate the development and purification of the mind.”

Bhante called upon the Aloka Novitiate participants to stay connected with the Triple Gem and create their own Sangha – their own spiritual community.

He advised that the affinity of coming together in the Aloka Novitiate be nurtured by maintaining communication to be informed. And build this up to commune with compassionate love.

In the context of commune and communal support, Bhante said the sensible thing to do in such times of change is to invest in something that will sustain life.

Action Plan

The following are the decisions made in the mini workshop that deliberated on Bhante’s advice of connect, communicate and commune:

Maintain Aloka Connect, groups of five or more that will stay connected and do things together like having fellowships as well as attending Dhamma discussions and Metta Bhavana sessions in Aloka House

Dr Upali passes on

It is with sadness that we received news that Dr. Upali de Tissera, one of the pioneering supporters of Aloka and the Australian Buddhist Mission, passed away early this morning.

Bro John Cheah, current president of ABM, wrote this to us: Dr Upali has been a key member of the Australian Buddhist Mission serving as Vice President for 6 years, from 1987 – 1994, and as President for 7½ years, from April 1999 to September 2006.

His participation in the committee has spanned two critical phases in the history of Aloka and ABM : the setting up of the Aloka Meditation Centre in 1999 and the construction and opening of the Aloka Stupa in 2005.

In 2006, he was able to hand over to the next generation of leaders, although he continued to be involved in ABM in an advisory capacity. He was also a founding Life Member of the Dhammaduta Foundation Inc.

As a doctor, he personally looked after the health and well-being of Venerable Mahinda and Sister Sumitra, residents of Aloka as well as those from Malaysia and Singapore who were in Aloka Meditation Centre for long retreats. That is his brand care, compassion and love.

Bro John Cheah also related this: Bhante has been with Dr Upali right up to the last days of his illness, postponing his travel to Malaysia. Dr Upali very faithfully received Bhante’s instructions and guidance, maintaining his steadfast devotion to the Dhamma.

Bhante has this short message to share with us:

“In the last week when Dr Upali was in hospital, I asked him 3 questions.

‘Do you have any fear?’ He said ‘No’.

‘Do you have any worries?’ He said ‘No’.

‘Do you have any attachment?’ He said ‘No’.

From this I understood he was well-prepared to face death. I visited him on several occasions to remind him, even in his final moments, to take the opportunity to apply and realise the Dhamma, which he did. Despite his physical pain and discomfort, I was able to see him get into deep levels of calmness and peace."

Dr Upali briefly stopped over in Kuala Lumpur enroute to Sri Lanka to provide relief work after the tsunami of 2004 and it was a privilege for some of us to meet him. Dr Upali came across as a soft spoken, humble and above all, a selfless man.

Let us dedicate all the merits for Dr Upali's spiritual well being. May he continue to give blessings, guidance and protection to all his family members and loved ones, as well as to all the members and devotees of Aloka.

DHAMMA LEARNING, THE ARK WAY

Aloka Rainbow Kids beamed into Aloka House @ Dana One on 25 April 2010, heralding a specially designed experiential and fun-filled Dhamma education programme.

ARK, as it is known by its acronym, was received with excitement as it introduced a modern and contemporary approach to Dhamma learning for children that also required the presence and participation of parents.

Fifteen children and 16 adults arrived with eagerness in anticipation for the first programme to roll out after their interest was heightened by a sneak preview at the previous Sunday’s orientation.

Just like the how the rainbow never fails to bring the child-like in us with spontaneous joy and outbursts of excitement “look, look, the rainbow!”, the ARK programme aims to bring joy and optimism for both children and adults as the Dhamma unfolds for them.

This activity-based interactive programme that forges bonding and cross learning lends a new perspective for the timeless teachings of the Buddha to be imparted and nurtured.

The kids and parents -- four to five in each group -- were assigned to their new Dhamma families named Dana, Sila, Kalyana and Mitta; and in togetherness, they will learn, practise, serve and help one another.

ARK programme, which is run on a fortnightly frequency on the 2^nd and 4^th Sunday of the month, begins with a puja followed by metta bhavana to start the day with thoughts and feeling of loving kindness.

Brain integration exercise comes next. Kids and parents get on their feet for some simple exercises to harmonise their energy and align their bodies and minds for better learning and performance.

Mind and body now prepared, they are now ready for the Dhamma which is delivered in a manner that brings out its brilliance like that of a rainbow which never ceases to amaze children and adults with its wonder and splendour.

A departure from the classroom-style of teaching, the Dhamma is presented vividly in colourful and eye-catching visuals that accompany the messages which are conveyed in clear, simple and succinct manner.

The facilitators too have thought of activities that aptly impart and reinforce certain values. For example, the simple activity of keeping a tissue in the air which drew squeals of laughter from young and old drew home the point of team work and support for one another. Not only that, what dawned upon all was the realisation that it takes only 15 muscles to be happy (laugh) and 72 to frown!

Through another simple exercise of putting on paper good and bad habits, children quickly realised how easily the habitual tendencies grow in them. Owning up to it, they were then guided to make conscious efforts in replacing the bad habits with good ones.

In the first programme,parents had their separate session on “Parents as Role Models”. Trainer Bro Mitra Chong sparked off an interesting discussion on parenting skills. Parents also shared their own personal trials and tribulations in bringing up children.

Kids and adults regroups for hymn singing session which is followed by offering of lunch dana and contemplation on partaking of food. More parent and child group activities and Dhamma learning follow.

Since the inaugural programme, Aloka Rainbow Kids have been enthusiastic, looking forward to the next sessions. Parents too are just as enthusiastic, for they are involved.

ARK indeed shines brightly as in the brilliance of a rainbow. Parents beam with pride at their children’s excitement and enthusiasm. And facilitators are over the moon with the appreciative response.

Vesak and its Significance

Vesak is the time for all of us to reaffirm our faith and confidence in the Triple Gem.

Vesak is the time for us to commit ourselves to walk the Dhamma’s path, to sow the seeds of enlightenment in our hearts and to cultivate wisdom the compassion so as to be able to reach out to help sentient beings in times of need.

Vesak is the time for us to open our hearts to cultivate the compassionate love and cherish the good wish for all that all beings to be well and happy and to pray for the peace, harmony, and stability of this world we live in and to extend goodwill to all irrespective of race, of colour, creed or religious beliefs.

Bhante Mahinda gave this timely reminders in his recorded video Vesak B.E. 2554 message for all.

Recalling the significance of this thrice blessed day of the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha, Bhante traced how each of these events were special and held deep meaning for us till today.

“The birth of the Buddha was a very special occasion. It marked the culmination of the all the great virtues and qualities which the Buddha had perfected from life to life,” he said.

“These virtues or perfections are perfections of dana or generosity, sila (morality), nekkhama (renunciation), panna (wisdom), viriya (effort), khanti (patience), sacca (truthfulness) , adhithanna (resolution), metta (loving kindness), upekkha (equanimity).”

Bhante said the nature of the Buddha’s birth was not an ordinary one. Before he was born as Siddharta Gautama, he was in Tusita Heaven as a great Boddhisatta. He was able to choose the proper time, the place, the country, the family, the clan as well as the mother to whom he is to be born.

Ordinary human beings do not have such privilege but because of the virtues practiced from life to life and perfected, he had the great privilege which indeed made his birth special.

The enlightenment of the Buddha, added Bhante, was also an unique event. “It opened path of deathlessness. It showed the way how mankind can cross that ocean of samsara, the cycle of birth and death, to put an end to old age, sickness and death, once and for all.”

On the full moon day of May in the place now revered as Bodhgaya, Northern India, wisdom dawned upon the Buddha under the bodhi tree. Three important insights arose in him – in the first insight during the first watch of the night (from 6 pm to 10 pm), he saw his previous lives in great detail; in the next watch (between 10 pm and 2 am), he saw how beings die and are born according to their karma; and in the third watch (between 2 am and 6 am), he had the insight of how to put an end to the defiling tendencies of greed, hatred and delusion.

This knowledge or insights have been passed down in a form of a formula known as Paticca Samupaddha or Dependent Origination which explains how suffering arises and ceases. With these three insights, the Buddha was free, having overcome the pains or cravings and attachments. His mind was liberated and the Buddha was endowed with various spiritual powers and unique abilities to teach and enlighten others.

“That is the uniqueness of the enlightenment of the Buddha, which opened the way for human kind to go beyond the shores of suffering to put an end to the cycle of birth and death and overcome old age, sickness and death,” Bhante emphasised.

The third event is referred to as the Maha Parinabbana or the great passing because the Buddha did not die like an ordinary human being. The Buddha passed away with great clarity of mind.

Bhante explained: “We are told how in his reclining posture, his mind was composed. He was able to raise his mind from the first level of mental absorption, from the first jhana, to the second, to the third, to the fourth, and then right up to the eighth jhana. From the eighth jhana, he was able to bring his mind back to the first jhana and from the first, to the second, to the third and to the fourth and then he entered Maha Parinabbana.

“His mind was absolutely clear. He had no more clinging and attachments. No more fear. No more confusion whatsoever. This is how the Buddha he passed away – in a great and unique manner. “

Bhante also reminded us of the very important message that the Buddha left for the world.

Bhante emphasised that it is important that “we all heed this message that the Buddha left for the world as we live in this time of great change and uncertainty”.

Three friends – Ah Moe, Lar Lee and Kir Lee – were at their usual mamak stall at the corner. The usual evening bantering took a slightly more serious turn when Lar Lee raised the topic of approaching Vesak...

Lar Lee: Oh, how time flies! Vesak is approaching. Aloka Foundation is seeking volunteers for their stall outside the Buddhist Maha Vihara on Vesak eve and Vesak day.I want to participate in their all-night chanting at Aloka House on the eve and how am I going to volunteer my services at their stall on Vesak day?

Kir Lee: Aiyah, what’s the problem. You make it like a b-i-g problem! Simple. What is Vesak? The thrice-blessed day, right? So, what to do you in this thrice blessed day? Spend your time in practice lah! Why waste time doing unbeneficial things like selling things at the stall?

Reflect on the birth of the Buddha, which is the culmination of many virtues he had perfected from life to life. Didn’t Bhante (Mahinda) tell us that whilst remembering the birth of the Buddha, we must also recall how he perfected the virtues of generosity, morality, renunciation, wisdom, effort, patience, truthfulness, resolution, compassion, loving kindness and equamity...

Lar Lee: But, but...

Kir Lee: What but, but! Reflect on the Buddha and his Enlightenment. Didn’t you read Bhante’s article on the Significance of Vesak? Bhante reminded us the Buddha’s unique and most profound knowledge and insight which arose in him on the night of his enlightenment that led to Him showing us the way...

Lar Lee: I know, but being of service at the stall...

Kir Lee: Let me finish. Reflecting on his attainment of Parinibbana. Don’t you recall the Buddha’s last message. Bhante always recite it in Pali, vayadhamma... i can remember but it means Transient are all component things. Work out your deliverance with heedfulness. Ah, ah... shouldn’t we then spend Vesak in honour of the Buddha to strive on with diligence?

Lar Lee: I agree with you. But you don’t allow me to talk. Now have you finished? Can I talk now?

Ah Moe: Kir Lee, you have said so much. Let Lar Lee speak his mind.

Lar Lee: Thousands flock to the Buddhist Maha Vihara on the eve as well as on Vesak each year. They may be just ‘once-a-year Buddhist’, as what some of us might want to refer to them. But let us look at their intentions. Isn’t it in reverence...to pay homage...to seek blessing?

Shouldn’t we then rejoice with this demonstration of faith and devotion? Shouldn’t we be of service to them and pave the way for them to further strengthen their faith and confidence? You may view it differently but joss stick clearance, crowd control etc etc etc are noble and meritorious efforts – service for the happiness of the many.

Isn’t service listed by the Buddha as one of the ten meritorious deeds? Isn’t service a form of dana, which in turn is one of the ten paramis or perfections?

On top of that, what Aloka Foundation is doing at its stall has more spiritual significance than just selling of tickets for light offering. It is promoting the offering of lights at the Buddha’s holy places which will be Kushinara, Sravasti and Lumbini in conjunction with its Novitiate Programme at the end of this year. It is creating the opportunity for those who will not be going to these holy sites to at least offer lights.

By being a volunteer at the stall to promote this, we will be paving the way for others to connect with the Buddha, illuminating the darkness of our ignorance as a result of our delusions. Isn’t this a noble effort and exemplary service?

And my dear friend, aren’t all these practice. Practice is not just chanting and meditating. Please do not get me wrong. I am not belittling chanting and meditation practice on Vesak. I am weighing it against the practice of service, dana, metta, karuna, mudita, upekkha and many more virtues.

So Kir Lee don’t have this blinkered view.

Kir Lee: How can you say that of me!

Ah Moe: Hold it the two of you. I have been listening to both of you. You have put forward strong points in your view of how Vesak should be celebrated. I agree with both of you. There’s no right or wrong in what both of you have said. Is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes? Is the cup half empty or half full?

What both you have put forth underlines that Vesak should be celebrated as an opportunity to draw inspiration and to reaffirm our commitment to the Buddha, as the fully enlightened teacher; the Dhamma, as the sublime teachings that has liberated many and has potential to liberate many more; and the Sangha, the noble disciples that have kept the dispensation of the Buddha still available today.

It is a day of devotion, a day of inspiration, a day of celebration of what the Buddha has prized us with a gift that excels all gifts.

I’ll be celebrating it by joining in the metta bhavana in Aloka House on the eve and stay for the first hour of the all-night chanting. On Vesak Day, I’ll volunteer to be of service at the Aloka Foundation stall and help in promoting the light offering.

I get to be devotional in practice and also inspirational in practice. And I suggest that both of you join me.

With open mouths, Both Lar Lee and Kir Lee looked at Ah Moe. The wisdom... lighting up the darkness instead of complaining of the darkness.

The spate of earthquakes and natural disasters of late are just too close for comfort.

What are we to do? How are we to prepare for the unexpected?

Aloka Foundation's Dhamma Devotion Day or 3D, on Saturday, 24 April 2010 at Aloka House @ Dana 1 will devote to spiritual preparedness.

Aptly titled ALERT in the Last Message of the Buddha, this 3D session will feature a never-shown-before recording of Bhante Mahinda on the Buddha's last message and its context of spiritual preparedness.

Come and listen and be guided by Bhante on how to be ALERT spiritually as well as in the context of Aloka Emergency Readiness Team, how to be prepared physically and psychologically.

This is monthly gathering of all Friends of Aloka to engage in communal Dhamma practice and sharing will start at 3.30 pm. Bhante's recording will be followed by group discussion. The session will end with metta bhavana to dedicate merits to the victims and survivors of the earthquakes.

Heart of Service

Bear in mind and heart that you are here to bring joy, peace and happiness to people in their hearts.

Sister Sumitra got to the heart of the matter of service in this profound sentence when she guided the Aloka Foundation Project Team leaders and members in a One Heart, One Mind Dhamma-in-Service Workshop in Alokarama in December.

She underlined the need to reach into the hearts -- that of those whom we serve as well as our very own.

"Practise to open your hearts so that those you serve can feel the love that you have. When they feel this, they will want to come to the Dhamma. They will want to find out why you are full of energy to give them love and to serve them. That is how you impart the truth to them," she added.

Thus serving with love is essentially one's practice and training. Sister Sumitra advised that one should not "make personal" this service by holding the view that one is serving Bhante Mahinda or Aloka Foundation.

"You're serving Buddha-Dhamma. You are serving all sentient beings," she said, adding that in this reflection, service does not become personal and constricted.

"It's deep in your heart that you have chosen to walk the path of practising the Dhamma and realising the truth. Giving a helping hand to others in the process becomes very much part and parcel of this."

However, she cautioned that this path of service is not easy. It's fraught with difficulties. Apparent will be praise and blame, two of the eight worldly conditions that the Buddha has reminded us of.

In such situations, focus our minds and have the right understanding to make things work better.

But of primary importance is that while serving, we need to find time for ourselves and our practice. Sister Sumitra said only through practice, will we realise the Dhamma. It will gives us a better understanding and appreciation of the sublime qualities of the Buddha and the myriad difficulties that the Buddha went through from life to life.

This, essentially, will give us the confidence and inspiration to practice and serve.

SMALL BUT BIG INSPIRATION

Why would a boy not yet ten make a choice to leave the comfort of his home and spend weeks in a near spartan living conditions in India for three successive years?

Accommodation has been very bare rooms with just nailed together wooden beds and thin mattresses. Water is cold. If there water heater, it does not often work. The pipes too do not work well. Electricity supply is erratic with power outages common day and night.

The air is always filled with dust and the streets, everywhere is dirty.

Food is simple. No fancy fare. Days on end, it can be cauliflower and cabbage. And it is also just two meals a day, no dinner.

Strict discipline and regiment have also be followed, like waking up as early as 5 am and being out and about by 5.45 am for daily morning chanting.

Any boy that age would not want to make such a sacrifice of his school holidays which would mean endless hours of fun, playing online games, watching movies or TV etc etc etc. But not Samita Lee Kah Peng (left in top picture with Ven Sumedha, the High Priest of Mulaghanda Kuty Vihara and fellow samanera Vajira Nanda).

It is astounding that he chose this, not for one year but so far three in a row! Why is he a picture of contentment and happiness without TV, Internet and the luxuries and comfort of modern living?

I don't have the answer and my guess is that Samita doesn't exactly know either. He just likes it. He will probably know later in age when the purpose of life unfolds for him.

Samita first made his choice in 2007 when he was seven to join the Aloka Novitiate in Lumbini as a pilgrim. I learnt that he wanted to celebrate his birthday at the place where the Buddha was born.

Accompanied by his mother, Samita was just an observer of the goings-on at the Novitiate programme. This cute little boy was resplendent and princely looking in his special white attire on his birthday. He was personally coached by Bhante Mahinda on how to make birthday wishes as well as taught to recite in Pali and English, the first three highest blessings of the Mangala Sutta.

Samita must have been inspiration on his return home that year. The following year, he came to the Aloka Novitiate in Bodhgaya not just with his mother but also grand parents. In his princely white, he participated in the programme, observing the Eight Precepts.

He made up his mind in Bodhgaya that he would be in Sarnath the following year and he would be a samanera, this time observing the Ten Precepts.

This year, Samita went to Sarnath not just with his mother and grand parents but also his father and aunt in tow. Father Lee Siew Kee joined as a samanera while the rest of the family members were pilgrims.

Samita wowed many by keeping to the discipline and regiment -- donning the robes, being mindful as much as he could in his actions and also delivering a speech at the closing ceremony where he recited what he had learnt in Pali for all three Novitiate programmes.

Small as he may be, but he is indeed big in inspiration!
